Circuit of the Americas Everything is Bigger in Texas

IGT

After a two-year hiatus, International GT was thrilled to return to the world-class Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX. The weather was perfectly crisp and clear all weekend after an all-day rainy load into the paddock on Wednesday.

Arguably some of the best battles of the weekend came from Mission Foods GT3 Cup 3.8 category so what better place to start our race coverage? There was a bit of excitement early when TED GIOVANIS #64 and his Team TGM had to switch from his regular 4 liter ride to his backup 3.8 liter car after some mechanical issues in testing. The podium saw lots of different faces with TLM Racing driver JODY MILLER #3A winning the first sprint race and taking second in the second sprint race. Also from TLM Racing, JAMES HAMMAN #176 won his first IGT race finishing first in the enduro on Sunday! Jim had a strong weekend taking a second and third in the sprints.

The TLM dominance was broken up with JOHN BLEAZARD #33 from Quirt Racing, winning sprint race 2. Honorable mention needs to go to NICHOLAS GROOMBRIDGE #54with Speed Sport, who has had a challenging season but he had a solid run at COTA with a third in sprint 1 and a second in the enduro just behind Hamman. Competing in International GT for the first time was DAVID SAFRIS #05 who completed the enduro race podium taking a third place finish. Just missing the podium was ALBERT LUKAZIK #47 from Speed Sport. Albert and his wife Judit will have been to every IGT race of the season when he joins us for the Daytona finale.

The Mission Foods GT3 Cup 4 liter battles were fierce all weekend! DAVID TUATY #68, TLM Racing, shared his car with IGT newcomer PEDRO REDONDO from the Dominican Republic and they had an outstanding event. Pedro drove sprint race one and finished second to TLM teammate JERONIMO GUZMAN #22A who won the sprint and finished third in the enduro. Tuaty drove and won sprint race 2. The Tuaty/Redondo duo shared the enduro and took another first place finish! The spoiler to TLM Racing was MARK MATHYS #77 who is in a very tight battle for the 2021 Championship. Mathys was third in the first sprint race and second in sprint race 2 and the enduro, which he shared with MIKE SKEEN.

At the front of the field, ANDY PILGRIM #4 in the SKI Autosport red Ferrari 458GT enjoyed smooth sailing at COTA all weekend taking a dominate sweep of overall wins. Having plenty of traffic to navigate, Pilgrim did not turn a wheel wrong all weekend. Also racing very strongly and sweeping the Mission Foods GT3 Cup 4.R category was JUAN GONZALEZ #81, racing at his home track. Juan, like all the drivers, enjoyed the great crowd of enthusiastic fans, many with kids who went home with a bag of race car shaped Mission Foods tortilla chips.

Our Stuttgart Cup category continues to see large fields and great racing. 2019 and 2020 Champion WILL WACHS #017 holds onto to his points lead in the championship, winning all three races on the weekend in the 3.4 category, in his quest for the illusive three-peat. From Quirt Racing JONATHAN BROWNE #94 dogged Wachs all weekend and took runner-up finishes in all three races.

There may have been a bit of fender rubbing between 94 and 88 (Jon and JAMES BROWNE) during sprint race 2 but as dad said – “I pay for both cars!!!”

In the 3.8 category THOMAS KOPCZYNSKI #520 from RS1 dominated the sprint races winning both. JAMES BROWNE #88 (father to Jon) was relentless against Kopczynski in the sprint races taking a pair of second place finishes but improved his weekend by winning the enduro on Sunday.

Another newcomer to International GT adding to the Quirt Racing stable (along with the Brownes and Bleazard) was MARIA MEJIA #22 in a 3.8 Cayman. Mejia had a fantastic first run with IGT and after a couple of third place finishes in the sprints, stepped up on the podium to second in the enduro which she shared with Quirt Smith.

Nobody in the field has closer ties to Circuit of the Americas than COLIN COHEN #15 being part of its build and early years and it was an exciting weekend at his home track for the IGT veteran. After an incident at VIR a couple weeks ago, the NORWOOD AUTO ITALIA crew went to work trying to source parts and get his Ferrari 458 back to racing form. However, to cover his bases Colin also entered his Maserati in the IGT Exhibition category. Great work by the crew, led by Chris Coffe, got Colin’s beautiful Ferrari to the grid and had a great run winning both sprint races.

Speaking of the Exhibition category there was a terrific battle between first time IGT competitor JORGE MADRUGA #17 from Speed Sport Racing and JOE RIZZO #12 with RS1 (along with co-driver SPENCER PUMPELLY) in the 4 liter Cayman. Rizzo sweep the category on the weekend, winning all three races but Jorge had a very strong performance. Both teams plan to be back at Daytona for the series season finale.
