2022 Season Finale Daytona Excitement Dramatic Finishes

IGT

It’s been a long and exciting season for International GT with record breaking entries at every venue we visited in 2022 and a points championship that came down to the final minutes at Daytona!

IGT

JAMES SOFRONAS #14 from GMG Racing joined the series in his Audi R8 and took overall wins in sprint race 1, 2 and the enduro but GMG teammate KYLE WASHINGTON #32 kept James from a sweep, claiming the overall win in sprint race 3 in his GT4.R.

The Exhibition category also saw a couple of Porsches from Kelly Moss driven by PJ HYETT #23, AO Racing and DAVID BRULE #48. Hyett finished runner up to Sofronas in sprints 2 and 3 and the enduro. While Brule finished second in sprint race 1.

JUAN FAYEN #17, FMS Motorsport, having already clinched the 2022 Maranello Cup championship, debuted at Daytona his new GT3 4.R Porsche in the Mission Foods GT3 Cup taking third in sprint race 1.  JON MANSHIP #116, Wright Motorsports took a pair of wins in sprints 1 and 2 and TOM PANK #42, Ultra Performance clinched the enduro win which moved him into second place in the final 2023 championship points standings.

In the 4.I category DAVID TUATY#68, TLM Racing proved dominant winning three of the four races on the weekend! However it was STEPHEN HAMMAN #72, TLM Racing who played the spoiler, taking the sprint race 1 win and also finishing second in the enduro. International GT Series Founder, BILL RIDDELL #777, Autometrics returned to IGT competition and stood on the podium for three of the races, finishing second in sprint 2 and a couple of thirds in sprint 3 and the enduro which he co-drove with SHANE LEWIS. Shane, in turn, graciously shared his champagne with DT on the podium (below). MARK MATHYS#77, Wright Motorsports, visited the podium taking a second in sprint 3 and a couple of thirds in the other sprint races.

In only their second International GT event, EVAN STAMER #53 and SCOTT BLIND #45 from Ruckus Racing, made another strong impact on the GT3 4.0 competition at Daytona.  Stamer swept the podium with a first, second and third in the three sprint races, while Blind took a third and second in sprints 2 and 3 respectively.

TOM HAACKER #29, Competition Motorsports won sprint 1 and took second in the enduro and teammate GREGORY BENNETT #1 finished second in sprint 1 and third in the enduro.  We mentioned Kyle Washington in the GT3 4.R category but car issues had him going to a back up car and winning sprint race 2 in the 4.0 class – we always say, it’s good to have options!  GMG Racing’s third entry, TODD PARRIOTT #770 took the enduro win, teaming with co-driver ANDY LEE.

Once again, as has been the case all year, the largest entry was in the Mission Foods GT3 Cup 3.8 category. However, even with the very full field, there were three drivers who stood on the podium in all four races on the weekend.  LUKAS PANK #40, Ultra Performance, sealed the 2022 Championship with 3 firsts and 1 second place finish. Not to be denied, BRADY BEHRMAN #428, Hardpoint Racing, won sprint race 2 and finished runner up to Pank in the other three races. Most consistent was JAVIER RIPOLL #191, Citimarine Motors who finished third in all four races. Don’t be misled by the podium consistency with Pank, Behrman and Ripoll, there was very close racing throughout the 3.8 liter field.

IGT

NICK KARANGELEN #76 returned to IGT competition after missing a few events and swept the Mission Foods GT3 3.6 category.

Speaking of people we have missed and haven’t seen in a while, BENOIT BERGERON #127, Etcetera/Keep Frozen Racing returned to Maranello Cup at one of his favorite tracks Daytona. The Canadian had a great event, sweeping the Ferrari category with wins in sprints 1 and 2 and even running among the top six overall in both races.

ROLAND VEIT #16, Pocono Sportscar took the runner up position in sprints 1 and 2 and the win in sprint 3.  Enough to secure second in the 2022 Maranello Cup championship for Roland.

Daytona saw the largest Cayman entry in the Stuttgart Cup category this season, almost matching GT 3.8s! The 4.0 class was split with ROLAND KRAINZ #118, RS1 winning sprint 1 and the enduro, while MATT JOFFE #99 returned to IGT competition after a bit of a hiatus with Extreme Velocity Motorsports and won sprint races 2 and 3.

We welcomed FLORIAN EYME #119, Kaizen Autosport at his home track at VIR a couple months ago where he quickly found great success racing in the Series. However, it’s not just the hometrack advantage where Florian dominates, he swept the sprint races in the Cayman 3.8 liter category, winning all three. MARIA MEJIA #11, Quirt Racing had a good outing on her way to clinching second in the Stuttgart Cup championship, taking a second and third in sprints 1 and 2. RODRIGO AZPURUA #9, Zotz Racing, who joined the series for the first time at Watkins Glen this year scored a couple of third place podium finishes in sprint races 1 and 3 and KEVIN MAXIM #18, Goldcrest Motorsports grabbed second in sprint race 3. However the enduro belonged to RS1 with their three full-time drivers filling out the podium.

JOE RIZZO #12 along with co-driver SPENCER PUMPELLY took the race win and won the 2022 Stuttgart Cup championship. TOM KOPCZYNSKI #520 was joined by co-driver ERIC FILGUEIRAS to capture second place in the enduro, Tom also scored a second in sprint race 2. Teammate TOM BIGONY#174 joined with TRENT HINDMAN to finish third.

As we say goodbye to Daytona and wrap up 2022, we want to take this opportunity to thank Pirelli Tires, Mission Foods, Interlaken Inn, Fikse Wheels, Surface Transform, Sunoco, Speedcom Communications and The Race Tailor for an outstanding year! We will see everyone in Sebring in just a couple months.
